AMHERST EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL 1996
August 2-18, Amherst College, Amherst, MA
The festival has many parts, running concurrently:
1. The AEM Workshop, two weeklong series of classes and events; students may
attend either or both.
2. The AEM Concert Series, 14 concerts and recitals (8/3-17)
3. Three Weekend Conferences (Brass, Double Reeds, Harp) plus Early Music &
Instrument Exhibition
4. Six week-long self-enclosed programs (Amherst Baroque Academy, Virtuoso
Viol, "The Amherst Assembly" (English Country Dance), Recorder Virtuoso Program,
Lute Society Seminar, Historic Harp Seminar.
All are described below, in the order listed above.
1. THE AMHERST EARLY MUSIC WORKSHOP: August 4-11 and 11-18. Classes in
medieval, Renaissance and baroque music of England for all levels of recorder,
viol, reeds, dance, voice, and most other early instruments. 150 students each
week; international faculty of fifty includes Marion Verbruggen, Saskia Coolen,
Dan Laurin, Laurence Dreyfus, Wendy Gillespie, Mary Springfels, Julianne Baird,
Drew Minter, Wim Becu, Marilyn Boenau, Arthur Haas, workshop Collegium conductor
Philip Brett, and many more! (A complete up-to-the-minute faculty list will be
sent shortly.)
2. CONCERT SERIES Concerts are at 7:30 in Buckley Recital Hall unless
otherwise noted; admission $10, SS $5. No reservations; good seating is
available to all who arrive by 7:10. Rooms at the college are available to
nonstudents at $30/night. NOTE: all concerts are free to workshop participants.

8/16 A Day at the Faire: Whitsun 1590. A theatre production in memory of Paul
Echols. Dir. Grant Herreid, Dance Dir. Dorrie Olsson, Music Dir. Tom Zajac,
Poet Laureate Lawrence Rosenwald. Singers, instrumentalists, dancers and actors
recreate a day at a country fair somewhere outside London.

8/4-11 The Amherst Baroque Academy : Italian, English and German 17th-century
music
--"The Compleat Violin" with Simon Standage, violin, Jonathan Manson, cello,
Arthur Haas, harpsichord. Intensive program in for Baroque strings, including
master classes, ensembles, special topics. Optional evening program, "Fiddling
for Violinists" with renowned fiddlers.

8/4-11 Viol Virtuoso Program: Intensive study for advanced viola da gamba
players with the new international viol consort, Phantasm (Laurence Dreyfus,
Wendy Gillespie, Markku Luolajan-Mikkola, Jonathan Manson).
8/11-18 "The Amherst Assembly" A week of English country dancing with
Gene Murrow, director; Dorrie Olsson, historical dance technique; Kate Van
Winkle Keller, social and cultural history of country dance; and Jacqueline
Schwab, accompanist. FULLY ENROLLED.
8/11-18 Recorder Virtuoso Program Intensive study for advanced
recorderists with Dan Laurin, Pete Rose, Geert Van Gele.
8/11-18 Lute Society of America Workshop East: with Ronn McFarlane,
Stephen Stubbs, Frank Wallace, and Douglas Freundlich.
8/11-18 Historic Harp Seminar So far, Siobhan Armstrong of Tragicomedia
(trad. Irish, arpa doppia), Bill Taylor, Scottish & Irish, wire--strung,
medieval. Stay tuned!
FEES
TUITION: One week, $335; two weeks, $570 ($100 discount). Special premium for
Virtuoso programs, $60; for Baroque Academy, $80; Intensive Recorder Consort
Program, $25 (waived for pre-formed group of four or more). Some work-study
tuition aid is available; inquire.
ROOM AND BOARD AT AMHERST COLLEGE: $315 per week, single occupancy unless
otherwise requested, including all meals from Sunday dinner to Sunday breakfast.
Commuters pay a $42 campus-use fee and may purchase meals from the cafeteria.
