On the subject of patter:

Whenever I do an Irish program, I start out by saying, "I have a
confession to make. [pause] I'm not at all Irish, as far as I know.
[pause] But I did have the good taste to marry an Irishman...both
times!" This usually gets a laugh, especially from the women.
