Advice sought: The Conclusion

Here's the outcome of my attempts to audition for (with? at? what's the
proper preposition?) Sam at the local posh eatery. It turns out that not all
of the unprofessionalism lay on his side of the equation.

My first mistake: My contact had told me to call "Sam or Tony", and it was
Tony, not Sam, with whom I set up the audition. Whoops. If you want to
create a good impression, remember the name of the person you're going to
play for. However, Tony wasn't there for the audition, either. I asked
after him at the time, to no avail.

My second mistake: not giving Tony my phone number, so he could let me know
he wouldn't be there. Not that I really believe he would have called, and
not that he indicated he would have.

Anyway, I spoke with Tony on Friday, and told him that I'd be happy to play
for the customers on Sunday, but not for free, since I'd already auditioned
once. He said he'd check with his partner, and that I should call back
Saturday. I did so at the appointed time, and he wasn't there. (Question
for anyone who's worked in the restaurant business: Is this just the way the
business works, or is Tony being irresponsible?) Eventually, I got him on
the phone, and he said his partner nixed the idea. So, as learning
experiences go, this one wasn't too painful.

Take care, all,
Ellen James
