I hate to harp on it (sorry couldn't resist) but I think it is the fault of
TV. People have the stupid thing running from the moment they walk in the
door; whether or not they actually sit down and watch it. I think it makes
people numb and teaches them to have a five seecond sound bite attention
span. You can talk over it and it doesn't matter. And worse yet,
conversation falls into the same category. It is really sad when you go
over to someone's house to visit and they have the TV on and they are only
paying half-attention to their guests. I have a friend whose family does
that. Whenever they get together the TV is always running. She and her
husband are so sick of it that they put their TV away in an upstairs closet
and they bring it out and connect it only when they REALLy want to watch
something.
Actually I am beginning to think that it's not a bad idea, especially if
you have kids.
