HOW TO SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE THE MAILING LIST
=============================================
The requests for subscribing/unsubscribing are handled by real people
(not a computer program) reading email sent to the
harp-request@mit.edu address. It is important *not* to send the
requests to the mailing list address! The correct address to use is:
<harp-request@mit.edu>
To UNSUBSCRIBE or SUBSCRIBE, write email to <harp-request> with your
brief request to unsubscribe, subscribe, or switch formats.
If the amount of messages on the mailing list is too much for you to
handle, please remember that recent postings on the list are available
through the WWW service. The URL is:
http://www.tns.lcs.mit.edu/harp/archives/
Some choose to switch to the digest version of the list. The digest
is a bundled version of each day's postings.
Usually, requests are processed within 12 hours of receipt; however,
sometimes longer delays occur, especially if changes are requested
over the weekend.
About BOUNCING EMAIL:
=====================
If email begins to bounce and continues for a period longer than a few
days, you will be removed from the list without warning. Please note,
that in most cases email starts bouncing when the INBOX of the user
gets full or when the disk quota is exceeded.
Feel free to email list owner <harp-request@mit.edu> to ask if you are
still on the list, in case of doubt.
About DUPLICATED EMAIL:
=======================
Sometimes, list members may receive multiple copies of the same email
message. This occurs because list members may inadvertently send
email more than once, or because the email forwarder has crashed
before being able to send a message to everyone (in which case it will
send again to all on the list).
If a SERIOUS problem occurs, please contact the list administrators.
Serious problems include hundreds of copies of messages being posted
to the list by errant email accessories (such as vacation programs).
Please DO NOT flame the list members directly for what usually are
software errors.
Instructions on posting to the mailing list / Netiquette
========================================================
General:
========
There are over 350 subscribers receiving HARP and HARP-DIGEST. The
amount of daily messages exceeds 25 almost every day. These are the
basic reasons for this posting. We all want to keep the messages as
concise as possible to keep up the good standard and to save
bandwidth.
The list address is: harp@mit.edu
Please note that the headers will indicate that the sender of the
message is harp-errors@tns.lcs.mit.edu - this is because each message
gets processed by the list software at this address. Please check
your mail reader to see if, when replying to list messages, that it
does not send it to the harp-errors address. This mail will get
devoured and possibly never make it to the list members. Some list
members' software definitely does this, so when you reply, please
check to see that you are replying directly to the sender or to the
mailing list.
Basic rules:
============
1) Please keep personal messages *off* the list! Always reply to
individual inquiries at their *personal* email address. One-line
comments should also be directed to the originator of the message.
2) Please quote as little as possible! People don't want to read the
text they've already seen all over and over again.
3) Always change the subject header whenever the topic of the thread has
changed. This is to help readers picking the messages they are interested
in. It is recommended that you put an optional classification label in
the head of the subject header (see below). In general - keep the subject
header as informative as possible!
4) Commercial advertising, chain letters, virus alerts or personal flames
are strictly forbidden! Take a look at the list of suitable topics at
the end of this posting.
Subject labels:
===============
Please note, that these labels are optional and the classification is not
strict. If you come up with a good label, please drop a note to the list
owner.

The purpose of HARP and suitable topics:
========================================
HARP was started to get together harp players all over the world and
offer a forum of discussion on harp-related topics. Both Folk and
Pedal harp topics are covered here. We don't want to restrict the
topics to any particular style, musical period or skill level and
everyone is welcome to contribute. Therefore it's up to the readers
of the list to decide what they want to talk about.
Here are some examples as to what to talk about:
* Repertoire, technique and interpretation in different styles, such as
Medieval, Baroque, Renaissance, Classical, Modern, Jazz etc.
* Auditioning technique and actual audition announcements
* Various and sundry (concerts, records, jokes etc.) - you name it!
With regards, Henry, Jane and Andy
