In response to Ruthann's harp damage and for anyone else that may have that
happen I suggest the Restaurant's insurance should cover it. A couple years
ago, just after Carl Swanson had beautifully rebuilt my concert harp, I had
it in my storage closet in the basement of the Trapp Family Lodge. I came in
one night to set up for playing and noticed that there was blood all over the
harp - my first reaction was "who shot my harp?" but then I began to think I
was going crazy! On closer inspection, it turned out to be red epoxy paint
all dripped down the column into the gold leaf. Luckily it was not on the
soundboard. I rolled the harp upstairs to show to Johannes von Trapp. Then
we realized what had happened. The painters had come to lay expoy paint on
the staff dining room floor and the paint had oozed down around the heater
holes to the basement. Out of all the places it could have fallen, it
perfectly fell into the crown of the the harp, filled and proceeded to run
the column. Johannes immediately told me not to worry, that the paint
company's insurance would take care of the bill. The harp was shipped off to
Carl again and this time, the epoxy had to be chiselled out of the little
plaster flowers and the flowers had to be rebuilt and plastered before gold
leafed. The paint company covered the $5000.00 and the rental of another
harp during this time. Tina Tourin
