I have done one experiment on the long-term fatigue effect of vibration on
wood, and hope to do more soon. While heating may have a role in the 'warming
up' phenomenon, I think that there are more basic structural effects
involved.

As to the strings changing tune, I can believe that. A researcher of my
acquaintance tried once to use a sgnal generator to drive strings and had all
sorts of trouble because the tuning changed as soon as you got them moving,
due to the bending/heating.
