MAKING: newbie question

Hi. I'm brand new to this list, and I have a question that may,
simultaneously, annoy some of you because the answer exists in some ancient
FAQ, and open a whole can of worms for me. But here it goes, anyway...

Last year, I built a lap harp kit from HERE, Inc. I've been a fan of Irish
music for a long time, and am fascinated by the harp. My plan was to teach
myself to play once I'd built the kit. I found that it was too small to be an
adequate learning instrument, so now I've jumped in with both feet and am
preparing to build a 34 string instrument from plans I bought from Robinson's
Harp Shop in California. My question: is it necessary to make the neck out of
two pieces of wood joined at the bottom of the arch, or can one piece of
walnut (for instance) take the string tension?

I'd appreciate any input. Also, if you happen to live in the Toledo area, I'd
sure like to find a resource nearby. Thanks for your patience with a newbie!
