Folks:
The two manual harpsichords I've heard and seen used the two keyboards for
two different timbres, not two tunings. In fact, the keys are linked between
manuals i.e. when you press a middle C on the lower manual the upper manual
middle C also goes down like a player piano. Don't forget, Bach wrote the
"Well Tempered" compositions for keyboards that would play well in any key.
That's one reason they work well on most keyboard instruments.
As an aside, Wendy Carlos had a recording where she programmed her synths to
play in also sorts of exotic tunings. I believe she researched Gamelan
scales as one source. It's called "Beauty In the Beast." Anyone else ever
hear it?
