Harp-Car Stories

I read with amusement the stories of carrying pedal harps in little
micro cars, etc. When I bought my Toyota 4runner a couple of years ago,
I carted "Godzilla" (my Caswell Master Gaelic-slightly over 6' tall)
around to many car dealerships in western Oregon.

Upon arriving at a dealership, I'd leave Godzilla in my truck. I'd
mention to the salesman that I needed a vehicle my large harp could fit
in, sitting on its back, leaving room for a smaller harp and a third
passenger. You know how car salesmen are-they'll try to sell you
anything. They'd try to sell me all kinds of stuff clearly too small
for my requirements, even though I gave the salesman the harp's
dimensions. After I tired of arguing about MY harp with a car salesman,
I'd say "hang on a minute" and come back dragging the black-cased,
behemoth Godzilla across the dealership parking lot. You should have
seen the looks on the salesmens' faces. And then I'd say "well, do you
want to help me try to stuff it in?"

When that icky "bargaining" session finally came around (you know-when
you have to sit in the room with the "manager" and haggle over the
price), Godzilla was always sitting right there, towering over the
"manager." If I got fed up with this step, I'd just say, "Well, thanks,
but my harp doesn't like this car anyway" and leave.

Cheers,
