Robert ap Huw Symposium

Melodic Formulae in the ap Huw Manuscript

by Mr. Peter Greenhill (Rachub, Bangor)

The musical text of the ap Huw Manuscript is sufficiently large at 86 pages - containing over 10,000 columns of symbols - to enable an assessment to be made of the ways in which the music contained there was organized along formal lines. This paper concentrates on the horizontal or linear dimension of the text, by detailing the ways in which formulae were used to repeat the transform segments of text which were duplicated and transformed between different pieces. The text contains evidence of extensive and heavy systemization of melody, and the paper proposes that this can be very useful in helping us to arrive at an understanding of the music.

Fformwlâu Melodig yn Llawysgrif ap Huw

Mae testun cerddorol Llawysgrif ap Huw yn ddigon mawr gyda'i 86 tudalen - yn cynnwys dros 10,000 colofn o symbolau - i alluogi asesiad o'r ffyrdd y trefnwyd y gerddoriaeth a gynhwyswyd yno mewn dull ffurfiol. Canolbwyntia'r papur hwn ar ddimensiwn gorweddol neu linellol y testun, gan fanylu ar y ffyrdd y defnyddid fformwlâu i ailadrodd a thrawsffurfio rhannau o'r testun a ddyblygwyd ac a thrawsffurfiwyd rhwng wahanol ddarnau. Cynhwysa'r testun dystiolaeth o systemeiddio helaeth a thrwm yr alaw, a chyniga'r papur y gall hyn fod yn ddefnyddiol i'n cynorthwyo i gyrraedd dealltwriaeth o'r gerddoriaeth.
