Abstract:
The VuNet is a gigabit-per-second desk/local-area ATM network built in
the context of the ViewStation distributed multimedia project. The
ViewStation system takes a software-intensive approach to multimedia
where real-time data is processed at the application level and not in
specialized hardware. The VuNet hardware has been specifically
designed to support this software model. In particular, the network
interface has been designed for ease of use. A key feature of the
VuNet is that the more sophisticated functions typically found in ATM
networks have been pushed out to the edges of the system to become the
responsibility of the clients in exchange for simplicity and
efficiency. This paper describes the VuNet hardware and presents the
results of experiments in which video is transported across the
system.
