What is the Quokka?

You have tracked down the quokka. The first thing to know in understanding the quokka is that it is not a rat. When, in 1616, Dirk Hartog landed on a small island ten miles off the coast of what was to become Perth, Western Australia, he thought the quokka might be a rat. That's why he named the island Rottnest, a shorthand for rat's nest. But Dirk was wrong.

The quokka is more like a pint-sized kangaroo than a rat. (Dirk hadn't seen kangaroos way back then. They would have really bothered him.) It is found only on Rottnest, enjoying a sunny climate all year round, and a resort atmosphere to boot. That should mean that there are no quokkas within a stone's throw of LCS, but we're not sure any longer.
